• 1978 | Mining began in the North Pasture Mine in Hardee County. Mining and beneficiation operations were initiated north of State Road 62 and north of the Ft. Green community.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a Final Areawide Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Central Florida Phosphate Industry, a broad and comprehensive examination of the potential long-term and cumulative impacts of phosphate mining in Central Florida.

  • 1985 | The Florida Department of Natural Resources (now Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) issued a Final Order approving the Conceptual Reclamation Plan Application CFM-SP-CP for the South Pasture mine.
  • 1988 | EPA prepared a Site Specific EIS for the SP Mine II based upon the Areawide EIS, resulting in the issuance of National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit FL0040177, effective April 1, 1991, for the South Pasture Mine.
  • 1992 | The FDEP Bureau of Mine Reclamation issued “A Regional Conceptual Plan” for the Southern Phosphate District of Florida that included the SP Mine.
  • 1993 | The beneficiation plant was relocated to the present location south of State Road 62, where mining subsequently began at  the SP Mine in 1995.
  • 1995 | Mining transitioned from the North Pasture Mine to the SP Mine, located south of State Road 62.
  • 1998 | Data collection, such as wildlife surveys, began in the South Pasture Extension (SPE).
  • March 2010 | Environmental Resource Permit (ERP) and Conceptual Reclamation Plan (CRP) permit applications were submitted to the FDEP for the SPE.
  • May 2010 | Federal 404 Dredge and Fill permit application was submitted to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE).
  • August 2010 | Application for Development Approval (ADA) was filed for the SPE.
  • September 2011 | An updated Section 404 permit application was submitted to the ACOE to reconcile updates and maintain consistency between the ongoing ACOE and state ERP review.
  • November 2011 | FDEP ERP / CRP Permits were granted for the SPE.
  • May 2012| The Central Florida Regional Planning Council approved the SPE.
  • September 2012 | The Hardee County Board of County Commissioners approved the SPE.
  • November 2016 | ACOE 404 permit granted for the SPE.
  • January 2017 | Mining transitioned into SPE.
